About this location
Founded by the Danish West India Company in 1734, Christiansted is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in the Western Hemisphere. The entire waterfront district is a National Historic Site — pastel-colored 18th-century buildings with covered arcades, the iconic yellow Fort Christiansvaern, the old Danish customs house, and the boardwalk stretching along the harbor. What makes Christiansted exceptional for photography is that it's still a living town: the buildings are occupied, the harbor is active, and locals go about their day against a backdrop that looks largely unchanged from two centuries ago. Aerial photography reveals the full geometry of the historic grid against the Caribbean, with Hotel on the Cay visible in the harbor and the hills of St. Croix rising behind the town.
