Gallows Bay Port
Gallows Bay
Gallows Bay is a historic and commercial waterfront area on St. Croix, located just east of downtown Christiansted. While its name has a grim origin, the modern area is a vibrant center for residents and visitors, offering marine services, shops, and a variety of restaurants.
Gallows Bay
A dark past: In the 18th century, the area was known as "Galge Bugten" (Gallows Bay in Danish) and was the site of the gallows. Public hangings were held there for capital offenses, including treason, murder, and running away (marronage) by enslaved people.
